Have any of you heard about the exotic animals escaping in Ohio? Their owner went crazy and released over 50 wild, exotic animals and then killed himself. And the police shot almost all of the animals dead! As some of you know I live in Ohio, and it is a BIG DEAL to me, I love animals and this happened so close to home. I do not believe anyone should own exotic animals as pets.

This man had tigers, lions, wolves, monkeys, bears, etc. There is no reason why he should be able to own dangerous animals like these. They deserve to have wide open space to roam and not kept in small cage, and not to mention all the hazards that come with owning these animals!

Death Toll: 18 rare bengal tigers were shot dead by police, 17 lions, 8 bears, 3 mountain lions, 1 wolf, and 1 monkey lost their lives. One of the monkey was killed by a big cat but the rest of the animals were captured alive, but it was only like 6. I am angry at the police too for just shooting them, they did not even try to get tranquilizers. And their "owner" had just been released from prison a month earlier, clearly this man was disturbed and had run ins with the laws but still did not seem to get the police to check out his "farm".

If you want to read a whole in depth article on it: www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44964272/…

What I am making this journal for is to bring awareness about this issue, people should not be allowed to own exotic animals as pets! If you agree (especially any Ohioans because Ohio has some of the most lenient laws about about owning exotic animals!) THEN please SIGN THIS PETITION! It is on a legit site, change.org:

Thank you to anyone who signs!!

Also check out this great DA group about animals! :iconfreedom-for-tony:

I know, and of course tiger's were what they killed the most of. They are endangered but I seriously don't think the police cared, they say "they had to kill them to protect human life" but where they were released were on a huge 73 acre farm so there was enough time to get tranquilizers.

i'm feeling so much disgust right now.
to protect human life is not an excuse to murder nature's endagered species. it's not like any human lives were at stake at the time right?

The man released the animals on his 73 acre farm; and Zanesville Ohio, isn't a big city, lots of woods. It's not like they were released by a shopping mall or school, so I don't believe anyone was in direct danger. And if they saw any getting to close to where people were they could of shot those while they sent another to get tranquilizers, and when he would of came back they could of then tranquilized the rest they found in the woods. This is what I think should of happened, but now I just hope that what comes from this situation is banning people from owning exotic animals as pets!

I love animals - more than people sometimes - but I know why the police shot the animals rather than wait for tranquilizers; there was no time for them to wait for such things to come in, as they didn't have a ready supply (much less enough for the sheer amount of large animals i imagine) and the animals posed a serious threat to people and wildlife in the area. The police were justified in shooting them. I hate it, but they were.
I just blame the cowardly prick who somehow thought releasing them was a good swan song.

I'm going to disagree... For any animals that were too close to where humans are then they could of put those down but while some men are doing that one of them could of went and got tranquilizers, I believe they had plenty access to enough. By the time they got back (which wouldn't of taken long) they could of then proceeded to use them on the rest. Plus this farm was 73 acres, it's not like they were released into the city by shopping malls and schools and eating children during recess.

Also I live in a big city in Ohio and there has been a black leopard spotted around town for months. The police haven't even cared about it, and even though it is a well known fact this black leopard is loose, I bet the police still aren't carrying any tranquilizers for if they ever come upon it or receive a call about it and will just shoot it dead.

Also the police maybe could of prevented this whole situation if they had bothered to check on this "farm". They received a bunch of calls about him and his animals, plus the living conditions and he had just gotten out of prison. Do they check up on this? No. I don't hate police but I do believe these batch of them aren't the brightest.

ANYWAY I'm not here to argue with you about this, I posted this journal to bring awareness to more people about the issue at hand: banning people from owning exotic animals. I'm trying to get people to sign the petition at change.org. I think we all can agree they no one should be able to own exotic animals.

They used the stupid excuse "we had to kill them to protect human life" but it's not like they were running around the city by shopping malls and schools, the farm was 73 acres and woods everywhere (it's Zanesville, Ohio pretty hicksville there). I believe they had enough time to get tranquilizers, it's just disgusting how they handled things. It maybe could of been prevented if they had checked his place out, he got a lot of calls on him about animals and had just gotten out of prison too.

They shoulda used strong tranquilizers and then taken them back to there natural habbitat, or somewhere like a zoo until they can arrange to move them :/

I agree, but these police were all just let's shoot them and call it a day under the pretense of "we are protecting human life". Tigers are already endangered as it is and we just lost 18 bengal tigers in a day. The whole situation is just so sad and upsetting, I hope that what comes from this though is that people will be banned from owning exotic animals as pets. There is absolutely no reason people should be able to get a big cat like a tiger as a pet.
